The Impossible Dining Table

I call this dining table impossible, because it took hours and hours to figure out how to incorporate a butterfly leaf into a round table. Traditionally butterfly leaf tables are rectangular allowing room for the leaf to fold into the table. With a round table and a pedestal base it seemed impossible at first. But eventually I figured it out with the help of some great local furniture makers. The pedestal base is attached with hidden mortise and tenon joinery and each leg is secured with solid brass dowels. I was even able to carve the client’s initials into each leg to add an extra level of personalization. This may be the most custom piece of furniture I’ve built.
